What an AEO SDR should know before sending the first message
AEO outreach gets weak when the SDR starts with a product pitch before understanding the account. The goal of research is not to collect more facts. It is to find enough evidence to make the first conversation relevant.
1. Know the account before the person
Look at the company's search presence, content motion, category, growth stage and how buyers are likely to discover it. This tells you whether AI-search visibility is even a sensible conversation.
2. Map the likely owners
Search across SEO, content, growth, demand generation, digital marketing, product marketing and marketing leadership. Ownership varies by company, so treat the org chart as a set of hypotheses.
3. Find a trigger
A trigger can be a new content strategy, SEO investment, market expansion, AI initiative, leadership change, new category or public discussion about discovery. A trigger gives your outreach a reason to exist.
4. Build one useful hypothesis
The exact wording should change with the account. The important part is that the hypothesis is grounded in evidence rather than a generic template.
5. Know when to move on
If you cannot find a credible owner or a credible reason for the account to care, do not force the prospect. Good prospecting includes deciding who not to contact.
A simple qualification framework
- Fit: Does the company sell something where discovery and consideration matter?
- Ownership: Is there a plausible marketing owner?
- Signal: Is there evidence that search, content or AI matters to them?
- Timing: Is there a reason this conversation could make sense now?
- Message: Can you explain the reason for reaching out in one sentence?
